Women's Health Q&A

What are women’s health services?

Women’s health services include the care associated with the female pelvic organs. At Avenel Primary Care, women’s health includes:

  • Annual well-woman exams
  • Diagnosis and treatment of yeast or urinary tract infections
  • Birth control counseling
  • STD screenings
  • Pap smears, clinical breast exams, and mammograms
  • Evaluation and diagnosis of menstrual cycle concerns
  • Diagnosis and treatment for gynecological conditions

A woman might also seek support for care during and after menopause.

What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam is an annual visit during which your provider evaluates your pelvic and reproductive organ health.

Girls may begin well-woman exams in their teens to discuss puberty, their menstrual cycle, and sexuality, but these visits don’t include a pelvic exam.

After age 21, well-woman exams include a pelvic exam and clinical breast exam. During your pelvic exam, your provider checks for any irregularities and performs a Pap smear. A Pap smear is a swab of your cervix that checks for abnormal cells that could turn cancerous.

Well-woman exams also give you a chance to talk about concerns, like heavy periods, pelvic pain, or unusual vaginal discharge. Always feel free to ask questions at these visits about any problems or symptoms you’re experiencing. If you have any concerns about your sexual health, including birth control or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), feel free to discuss them during this appointment.

Women who are approaching menopause or have passed through menopause still benefit from well-woman exams. Your provider can help you manage symptoms caused by hormone changes, like hot flashes and night sweats, as well as address your increased risk for heart disease and osteoporosis.

What women’s health screenings do you provide?

Women benefit from regular screenings for:

  • Pap smears to look for cervical cancer
  • HPV (human papillomavirus virus)
  • Mammograms (for high-risk patients or women 40 and older)
  • Clinical breast exams

STD testing isn’t routine but is available upon request.

Blood testing and urine screenings may also be part of your women’s health care if you report symptoms like pain during urination or painful intercourse.
